Tanzania Peaberry
Our latest coffee from Africa is a peaberry coffee from Tanzania. Peaberry is not a coffee processing style or varietal, but actually a growing defect that effects the size and density of the bean. In a normal coffee cherry there is a single seed that grows and then splits in half, making 2 coffee beans.
This is why you have a rounded side of the bean and a flat side (the flat sides are touching inside the cherry). In a peaberry coffee the seed doesn’t split into two halves and remains a single bean per cherry. Peaberry beans are typically very small since their development was stunted and they have a distinctive round shape (no flat side). They are also quite dense and may sound a bit louder in a coffee grinder.
There are no distinguishing flavours associated with Peaberry coffee. Since Peaberry coffee can come from any varietal and process and origin, they taste like any other coffee with the same features. Some people think the higher density of the bean provides a more intense flavour, but that is debated. Mostly peaberry coffee is sold separately from regular coffee because its size and density makes the bean roast very different. Therefore it needs to be separated out from regular coffee so that they are not put into the roaster together. And some people think the little round beans are cuter.
